This post office was started during British era and it is still in function to deliver letters and couriers to the people living on the lake. And all these deliveries of posts are done by postman while travelling in a Shikara.

A Shikhara is a traditional Gondola type light rowing boat mostly seen on the pristine Dal Lake, used for leisure and tourism purposes, But apart from that Shikhara ride is also is also used by the locals for seaweed harvesting, fishing and transportation.

And for your surprise all the facilities of post office is available on this floating post office in fact they use Shikara’s own special seal to put on the envelops.
According to the officials of post office this post office was build 200 years ago even before maharaja’s Time and finally during British era this post received its office name of floating post office.
Every year this post office attracts thousands of tourists, they usually take pictures, buy special covers, postcards and stamps from here.
And finally in the end, Even though this post office is beautiful and useful but according to the locals the Internet and Social network has impacted the letter writing and sending to a lot of extent. But yes still many people use this way of communication because of emotional touch connects with it.
