Experts around the world believe that vaccination is necessary for everyone to deal with the corona epidemic permanently, but not everyone has vaccines available. Former UK Prime Minister Gorden Brown has suggested a ‘Burden Sharing Formula’ to make the vaccine available to all. They want this to be discussed with the meeting of the G-7 countries to be held in Britain next month.
Brown said in a webinar that 2021 is a year of increased international cooperation. We are fighting together problems like poverty, injustice, poor health, pollution and environmental degradation. Everyone is scared because of the Covid-19. The question is how to eradicate the disease. Vaccine is the biggest medium for this, but the Burden sharing formula is the only way that can bring sustainable investment for vaccination. The amount collected from this formula should be spent on health system in poor countries so that vaccination can be done in these countries also. There is a need to spend 10 billion dollars every year to build the necessary infrastructure for the preparation of the epidemic.
Every country’s share will be decided.
The Burden Sharing Formula should take into account the income wealth and differential benefits of every country and every benefit from the reopening of the world economy. The US and Europe will contribute 27% under this formula. Britain 5%, Japan 6% and G-20 member countries will contribute the rest. It will not only be a process of charity but it will also be a way to protect itself, because the longer the poor countries are surrounded by the epidemic, the epidemic will continue to spread its footing. It is true that it will cost billions of dollars to make a vaccine, but if we see the benefits associated with it, it will be several trillion.
Advocates of termination of vaccine patent.
He advocated for the vaccine to be removed worldwide to eliminate vaccine-related patents, saying, “I support all those who are urging the vaccine to be temporarily exempted from its associated patents.” This will allow other parties to get the license to produce the vaccine. He said that we know that 50-50 percent of the populations of America and Britain have been vaccinated but in Africa this figure is only 1%.
