One of the relieving news between the Corona virus crisis and vaccine deficiency is that Pfizer’s vaccine may also be available to India from July.
NITI Aayog member Dr. V.K. Paul said talks with Pfizer were going on and indicated that she would provide vaccines for India. This reinforced the news that Pfizer had asked to give five crore doses to India between July and October.
V.K. Paul said during a press conference on Thursday that negotiations were going on with Pfizer. He said that Pfizer has sought protection against the possible side effects of the vaccine, which the Government of India is considering and a decision will be taken soon. He said that this type of exemption was sought by Pfizer in all countries including the US, where its vaccines are supplied.
Paul said that after the resolution of these issues, the supply of vaccines from Pfizer is likely to begin from July. If Pfizer’s vaccine is received by India, it will be the fourth vaccine to be included in the Corona vaccination program. Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik vaccines are currently being used. Due to the low availability of vaccines in the country, only 15-20 lakh vaccines are being used daily. Whereas in the past this figure had gone above 30 lakhs.
Significantly, the US company Pfizer had said recently that it is ready to provide five crore vaccines in 2021 but it wants a big relaxation in certain regulatory conditions including compensation. This American company has indicated to provide 50 million vaccines this year. In this, one crore vaccines will be made available in July, one crore in August and two crore in September and one crore vaccines in October. The company has said that it will only talk to the Indian government and the vaccines will have to be paid by the Indian government to Pfizer India.
