Yes, the first case of covid has been reported from Mount Everest.

A Norwegian climber Erlend Ness has been tested positive for the covid and was evacuated by helicopter.

It should be noted that Mount Everest, world’s tallest mountain with the elevation of 8848.86 mt(29031.7 ft) is an attracting point for many climbers and hikers since a very long time.

But due to present pandemic situation few limited permissions have been given to the climbers for this summit.

As per the report of the hill “Nepal has issued 377 permits this year to climb Everest”. Nevertheless as far as the case of Ness is concerned it is believed that initially Ness had pulmonary edema which is often similar to altitude sickness.

In fact ness had been tested negative prior to departing from Norway and even before heading to base camp while he was quarantine in Kathmandu he was tested negative.

“I really hope that none of the others get infected… high up in the mountains. It is impossible to evacuate people with a helicopter when they’re above 8,000 meters” said Ness.

And he further added that “Breathing is already difficult at high altitudes, so any outbreak of disease among climbers presents urgent health risks,” added Ness.

Now as the positive case has been found among climber, this will definitely impact Nepal’s decision to open Everest to climbers.
